Renting a car is very easy in Chile. You just need to go to a car rental agency with your driving license, passport and credit card. Most agencies accept a foreign license, even if you do not have an international driving permit, which is not really useful in Chile. If you are a resident, you are supposed to have a Chilean driving license.

International rental agencies such as Hertz, Avis, and Europcar have offices in most major cities and in airports. Cheaper local companies also exist, like Econorent or West Rent a Car.

In Santiago, you can find many rental agencies on Avenida Manquehue Sur and Avenida Bilbao.

If you plan to travel to remote areas, it is better to rent a 4x4 vehicle because roads can be stony.

A few things to keep in mind before booking. If you return the car in a different city than the one where you rented it, you will pay a surcharge called drop off, which is often quite high. If you want to cross a border with a rented car, you must ask for a specific authorization when booking (agencies usually charge a fee for it) and may have to take extra insurance, required by the rental company or by law in some countries like Argentina. Finally, renting at the airport is more expensive than renting in town: if you need the car for a long period, pick it up at a city agency instead.

Frequently Asked Questions about Renting a Car in Chile

Practical Questions

Yes. You only need your driving license, passport and a credit card. Most agencies accept a foreign license, and an international driving permit is not really necessary in Chile. If you are a resident, you are expected to have a Chilean driving license.

Yes. Main roads and highways are of good quality, although rural and mountain roads can be in poor condition, which is why a 4x4 is recommended for remote areas. Keep local rules in mind: drive with your lights on outside cities, expect drivers to overtake on both sides, and remember Chile applies zero tolerance for drinking and driving.

It depends where and how you rent. Airport rentals cost more than agencies in town, and returning the car in a different city adds a high drop-off surcharge. Local companies are usually cheaper than the international brands, so compare both, especially for longer rentals.
