Chile Immigration law - official laws and policies

In this article, you will find a list of all the laws that currently apply to foreigners looking to immigrate to Chile.

Current immigration law in Chile

The immigration law in Chile has been updated in 2022, with a complete change :

  • In April 2021, Chile approved a new immigration law, the law 21.325.
  • This new immigration law came into force on February 12th, 2022, when its reglamento, the decreto 296, was published.
  • The different categories of tourist visas are described in the decreto 23, published on March 4th, 2022.
  • The different categories of temporary residency visas are described in the decreto 177, published on May 14th, 2022.

You do NOT need to look at all these laws and policies, as the rest of the articles provides guidelines easier to follow. But, in case you have a problem, or need to clarify a specific point, knowing the laws is always useful.

Previously, these are the law and decreto that ruled the immigration of foreigners in Chile. We indicate them for reference, in case you see them mentioned on other sites. Have in mind that they are no longer valid.

The official website of the immigration department has a page with the complete list of texts applicable. We do not recommend to spend time on this page, as it contains very precise texts aiming at clarifying specific issues. For the vast majority of people, the texts do not apply.
