Hi folks currently living in Chile. I am already an ex-pat with 12 years in Mexico, but looking to move to another country. I have several questions about making the jump to Chile. How is the real estate market since the earthquake? How much devistation occurred as a result of the earthquake? I saw some photos of several cities after the quake and it looked like widespread devastation. Is the country still prospering? I'd really appreciate any and all comments on these questions. Is it cold a lot of the time? Does it get dark early in the day during summer/winter?? Is there a concentration expat community or is it spread out like say Costa Rica? Is electricity expensive? i.e. what is the approximate average electric bill for a 3 bedroom house? Where are the most popular communities to live? Let's see have I left anything out? Oh yes, what are the Chilean Men like? (just kidding, sort of)
Looking to relocate to Chile...

Q: How is the real estate market since the earthquake?
A: Not bad. It is true that TV showed a lot of devastation, but that the destruction was not as bad as it appears. In Santiago, a few apartment buildings had trouble, but most of them had only superficial cracks and were fixed during 2010.Q:Is the country still prospering? I'd really appreciate any and all comments on these questions.
A: Yes and no. Production activities were normalized quickly after the quake (June/July 2010), and during the first half of 2011 the country experienced a lot of economic growth. On the other hand, the distribution of wealth is not as good as people would like, and that generates social stress. Today, we have a large student/professors movement asking for estatization of education, after years of having the private sector and municipalities in charge of public schools.
Q:Is it cold a lot of the time?
No. The weather is similar to the one in California (Santiago's weather is similar to Sacramento, and Valparaiso's is similar to San Francisco).Temperatures in summer vary from 10C to 30C (this is 50F to 90F), and it is relatively dry, and in winter vary from 0C to 10 C (33 F to 50 F).
Weather depends a lot of your location in Chile. In the north is very dry and rains a few days per year. In the center, winter has a few storms in the months of June, July, and August. In the south, rain season can extend from April until November.
Q:Does it get dark early in the day during summer/winter??
A: In Summer, average sunrise is at 7 AM and sunset at 9 PM.
In Winter, average sunrise is at 8 AM and sunset at 6 PM.
We observe daylight savings time, so in winter we are on EST and in summer we are in EST+2.Q: Is there a concentration expat community or is it spread out like say Costa Rica?
A: Most Americans are live in Santiago, Valparaiso and some cities in the north, located near mining operations or research centers (Antofagasta, Iquique).Q: Is electricity expensive? i.e. what is the approximate average electric bill for a 3 bedroom house?
A: Around CL$50.000/month, which is around $100 approximately. Your bill can increase if you use electric heaters. In that case, it can double during winter months.Gas bill is separate. People using a variety of heating systems during winter, varying from wall radiators (fueled by gas), electric radiators, gas heaters, kerosene-based heaters, and wood in fireplaces. Average monthly expenses in heating can range from a CL$30.000 to CL$150.000 and up during winter time ($60 up to $300)
Q: Where are the most popular communities to live?
A: Do you mean cities? Santiago, Valparaiso, La Serena, Concepción. Actually, you can find from cities located in the middle of the desert, near the ocean, in the mountains, etc.Q: Let's see have I left anything out? Oh yes, what are the Chilean Men like? (just kidding, sort of)
A: Depends of the age you are considering. Under 40 are more open, confident, and tend to share their responsibilities taking care of kids and jobs around the house. Older men are more "macho", old fashion if you will, and they do not help much around the house, and tend to wait for their wife/mother/sisters/girlfriend to do everything for them.Regards,
